HYROX training in Edgewater.

Running under fatigue is the part most people get wrong. We train the engine work, the sled, the wall balls and the transitions, and our coaches have raced and hold the certification.

The Stable is a strength and conditioning gym in Edgewater, Maryland that trains people for HYROX and other fitness racing. Both coaches are HYROX Certified Trainers, and the founder competes at CrossFit Semifinals level. Conditioning in regular classes already draws on HYROX style work, and training can be built around a specific race date through one on one sessions. The gym is about ten minutes from Annapolis.

The race punishes the gaps

Fitness racing exposes whatever you haven't trained. Most people arrive strong enough and fall apart on the running between stations, or arrive with a good engine and no capacity to push a loaded sled.

Our weekly programming already covers both sides. Sprint style conditioning on Fridays, longer and heavier work on Saturdays, and a full body lower intensity piece on Thursdays that builds the base everything else sits on.

That's by design. We built the strength work on a division one collegiate model and drew the conditioning from CrossFit, HYROX, gymnastics and bodybuilding. A race is one of the few places that tests all of it at once.

  • Running under fatigueThe hardest part to train alone, and the part that decides most races.
  • Sled push and pullLoaded work that nothing on a treadmill prepares you for.
  • Machine capacitySki and row pacing, and knowing what your actual sustainable split is.
  • Carries and lungesLoaded movement over distance, where most people lose the most time.
  • Wall ballsThe station that ends races. We train it as a skill rather than something to endure.
  • TransitionsMinutes get lost between stations. Practice is the only fix.

Certified, and still competing

Both of our coaches hold the HYROX certification and both still compete. That's worth verifying anywhere you train for a race.

Two routes

  • Classes plus open gymThe programming already covers the engine and the strength. Use weekday open gym for your own running and station work. From $149 a month.
  • One on one, built around a dateA block written backwards from your race. $100 a session with a coach, $120 with the founder, cheaper in packages.

Before you start a block

How long before a race should I start?
Eight to twelve weeks gives us enough time to build and then taper. If your race is sooner, we'll build the best block the remaining time allows.
Do I need to be fast already?
No. Most people who finish a fitness race weren't runners when they started. The running is trainable, and it's usually the biggest easy gain we can give you.
Is this a separate class?
Not at present. We handle race specific work in one on one sessions and open gym, with group classes building the base beneath it. If there's demand for a dedicated block, tell us.
Can I train here if I am not racing?
Yes. Most of our members aren't training for a race. The work that prepares an athlete for one is the same work that makes an ordinary week easier.
